Paint is a viscous liquid applied to the surface of an object to be protected or decorated, forming a strong, continuous film. It is typically made from resins, oils, or emulsions, with or without pigments, fillers, and additives, and is made from organic solvents or water. Due to factors such as raw materials, paints are prone to color variation during the production process. Increasingly, manufacturers are using precision measuring instruments to detect color variation in paints to strictly control their quality.
After learning that the YS3060 spectrophotometer from threenh Technology could solve paint color measurement and quality inspection problems, a Dongguan chemical company invited 3nh professionals to the factory for a direct demonstration of how to use the YS3060 to measure paint color. The company boasts a personalized management team, a sophisticated engineering team, professional colorists, and excellent after-sales service. They prioritize technological innovation and strengthened management, focusing on the development and production of high-tech products, striving to meet customer needs and fulfill their expectations. To improve product quality and maintain stringent quality control, the company sought to use 3nh spectrophotometers to detect color differences.
To facilitate measurement, manufacturers use the method of directly measuring the sprayed parts after spraying the paint.
The specific measurement process is as follows:
Step 1: Prepare the spray-coated sample to be tested;
Step 2: Turn on the instrument, set the parameters and formulas according to the instructions, and perform black and white calibration;
Step 3: After the black and white calibration is completed, press the “Print” button, first locate the measurement area with the image, align the standard sample to be measured with the test hole, be careful not to leak light to avoid affecting the test results, then press the “Test” button. After the “beep” sound, the measurement is completed and the test results can be viewed;
Step 4: After the standard sample measurement is completed and saved, press the “Menu” key to enter the “Sample Measurement” interface under the standard sample. Align the sample with the test hole according to the standard sample measurement method, press the “Test” key to measure, and the color difference measurement is completed after the “beep” sound, and the measurement result can be obtained (Figure 4).
The measurement is complete. Through the simple operation above, the 3nh Technology YS3060 spectrophotometer can intuitively display the Lab value of the measured sample and the color difference between different samples. The customer was very satisfied with the test results and bought the instrument on the spot. The company has introduced international high-end technology, uses advanced production equipment and high-quality raw materials from Japan, South Korea, the United States, and Germany, and is committed to the research and development and production of high-end coatings. The use of 3nh Technology’s YS3060 will surely be a strong combination, making the company’s product quality more perfect and creating better benefits.
How Color Management Supports Sustainability in Paint and Coatings
. It also has a big impact on the environment and the sustainability of a business. The use of color measurement devices and paint spectrophotometers by manufacturers. So, it is make sure that they are environmentally responsible and also improve efficiency
1. Reduces material waste
An accurate paint color match means that the need to carry out repeated test batches several times is eliminated. Which consequently reduces the amount of waste coatings drastically and also ensures that the raw materials are not consumed unnecessarily. This is the direct impact on the lean manufacturing objectives.
2. Optimizes pigment usage
Software for a paint formulation that precisely measures the chromaticity of different colors on a computer screen. It finds the minimum palette of colors required to accurately reproduce a given spectral curve.
Based on the spectral data, it finds the minimum quantity of each colorant without resorting to trial-and-error. Hence, reduces the environmental impact that heavy metals or volatile organic compounds (VOCs) cause.
3. Lowers energy consumption
Exact color control leads to fewer cycles of curing and recoating. Hence, it is energy saving in drying ovens, in the operation of mixing equipment, and automated spray lines.
4. Supports eco-label compliance
Programs such as LEED, Green Seal, and EU Ecolabel do need documented evidence of color stability and reproducibility. In particular, when the products are employed in the architectural or consumer-facing sectors.
Manufacturers employing reliable color measurement equipment can efficiently satisfy these certification standards.
5. Enables lifecycle tracking
Color measurement can facilitate the storage of tracking data alongside product batch numbers. Which can be utilized to predict maintenance. Hence, it is particularly useful in long-lifecycle industrial applications like automotive or marine coatings.
